Unique Requirements for PSY 198 (4 units)

Collecting and Analyzing Data

At least one study will be carried out in a professional and ethical manner and the data analyzed appropriately using SPSS or another appropriate statistical program.

Written Report

A review of the scientific literature (25-35 references), along with the rationale, method, results, and discussion of the student's experimental project will be presented in a formal, APA-formatted paper. This paper will be written and rewritten in parts over the course of the semester.

Extended Abstract

An extended abstract, designed for submission for presentation or publication, written according to APA format, will also be submitted. This extended abstract differs from the abstract that is included in the written report in that it is longer and more detailed. The former abstract will be posted on the web so participants can read about the results of the study. It should be 250-500 words.

Documentation

At the end of the semester, all forms used and all data collected in the study will be turned in. One printed copy and one electronic copy in MSWord (a floppy disk or email attachment) is required for each of the following:

• instructions to subjects
• informed consent form
• debriefing form
• all materials (task sheets, data sheets, scripts, etc.) used to run the study
• SPSS or Statistica command files and data files
• a codebook (can be an SPSS command file) identifying each column of data in the data file
• final draft of written report
• extended abstract for presentation or publication (250-500 words; to be posted on the web)

In addition, turn in all:

• used data sheets
• used informed consent forms
