Happy New Year, Class of 2006!

Where has God's providence taken you? In thinking about this question, we're planning a series of newsletters over the coming year to share how God's Providence has been evident to various members of the class of 2006. We hope that you will find these newsletters - and the stories they contain - encouraging and fortifying. For this first newsletter in the series, Kate McManemin wrote about her experiences over the last 6 years.

Hi, Everyone. Since graduating from Westmont, I've lived in Colorado, Argentina, Ft. Worth and Dallas, Texas. I attended graduate school at Southern Methodist University where I earned a Certification in Academic Language Therapy (for dyslexia) and Master of Arts in Education. After a season of teaching language therapy in private schools, I went through the Dallas school district for my teaching certification. I was placed in a Title I school teaching bilingual fifth grade. I'm now teaching second grade general education in my third year at the school. I've learned so much about at-risk students, large school districts and public education. I received a note last week in which one of my students told me: "Miss Mac, you're a good friend." I'm grateful that Westmont prepared me to succeed professionally at this school and emotionally/spiritually with my students and co-workers. I had no idea this was where I'd be 5 years after graduation, but God has certainly given me an adventure. Outside of work and school, most of my free time is spent volunteering with Young Life Dallas, improving my learning curve in the kitchen, or traveling to experience new cultures. I'm also soaking in any opportunity to speak Spanish, dance, run, taste new foods, play volleyball, and snow ski. I pray and trust the Lord will continue to teach me to see Him more clearly through both the heaviness of this world and the small joys of daily life.
