Europe Semester - 2005

Pictures and Itinerary are Here

Welcome to the homepage for our Europe Semester 2005 program. We are on our way and will return on December 7.

Updates for  those interested in our experiences will be placed here from time-to-time.

Update Wednesday, December 7
Athens has been a good change of pace from Turkey. The weather has continued to be fantastic. Today the group flies back to Los Angeles. Hopefully all of the parents and friends are prepared to pick us up! We had our last dinner together last night with lots of remembrances shared. Thank you to everyone back home for your support and prayers.

Update Thursday, December 1
We finished our tour of Turkey and we spent a beautiful day on the Greek Island Kos as we flew to Athens. Turkey had many highlights and memorable experiences. We saw several of the Biblical sites in Western Turkey and heard talks three times from Christians working there.  Many wanted to stay longer, but we have only a week left! The weather continues to be an amazement to all as we have seen very mild days, plus the long-sought snow in  Cappadocia.  Thanks to all those who pray for us.

Update Wednesday, November 16
Our stay in Italy is over with many highlights to remember. Seeing the Pope last Wednesday followed by the tour of the Necropolis under St. Peters were two of them. Today we are off to Istanbul and our 15 day excursion into Turkey. Dr. FisK has arrived and taken the teaching reigns. and leading the tours.

Update Friday, October 28
We have finished our much needed break in Salzburg and head to Venice tomorrow. Many different activities and excursions have taken place in these last few days. The weather continues to be just perfect. The Saltmine and Sound of Music tours were hits for the group. Now we go into Italy and move back in history.

Update Tuesday, October 18
The Homestays went well and everyone enjoyed our hotel and stay in Berlin. Many were wishing there were more days to see  the sites and to visit more with their homestay families.
Our travel to Prague included a short stop in Dresden to learn more about this city that is still rebuilding after the fire-bombing in WWII and from the Communist era.  However, most will say that Prague is the best so far. Such a beautiful city and lots of history and the picture below is what we see daily.  Tomorrow we leave for Munich.

Update Thursday, October 6
We leave tomorrow for Berlin and the homestays for this weekend.  Please pray for a safe and comfortable 12 hour coach ride.
The day of the excursion to Auschwicz was long and challenging, in many ways. We learned lots and are thankful for the opportunity to see such a significant place.  Krakow and Warsaw have been favorite places for many.  The weather has been unbelievably mild and dry. Four people are still waiting for lost luggage from the flight from Moscow to Warsaw!

Update Saturday, October 1

We have arrived safely in Warsaw with everyone doing well. Russia was an amazing experience with many pictures and stories to show and tell.

Update Saturday, 3 September
More pictures have been added with a new  webpage for that purpose. Use the link above

The Leaders

Dr. Dave Lawrence, Professor of Political Science
Co-leading the 2005 Europe Semester is political science professor Dr. David Lawrence. Joining him is his wife, Carolyn Lawrence, M.A., a veteran public school teacher. Since taking Westmont students to Europe during a 1970s May Term, the Lawrences have traveled extensively throughout Eastern and Western Europe, including home exchanges in England, Scotland, and Norway. In 2001, Professor Lawrence was a Fulbright lecturer in Ukraine and, in 2002, the Lawrences taught in the summer English language program at Lithuania Christian College. Both experiences acquainted them with the challenges facing emerging democracies once behind the Iron Curtain. Dr. Lawrence highly values international travel as a learning experience. “We have not only come to appreciate the historical experiences of other peoples and nations, we have learned to value the differences that set people apart and the common aspirations that bring them together. We have been especially heartened by what we share with people of faith in all cultures.”

Dr. David Marten, Professor of Chemistry
Chemistry professor David Marten will be co-leading his third Europe Semester in the fall of 2005. Having co-led the groups in 1998 and 2001, he is delighted to join Professor Lawrence and students in this extraordinary educational adventure that Europe Semester provides. Professor Marten will be accompanied by his wife, Ramona, a junior high librarian who also teaches the Children's Literature course in the Education Department. "We so enjoy traveling with students and sharing our interests in the development of Western Civilization and Art," says Professor Marten, "where each historical site we visit, and each major work of art we see, provide opportunities for growth through discussion of ideas and personal insights. The friendships built and memories of shared experiences will last a life-time."
